2019 Roccolo Grassi Amarone della Valpolicella

The 2019 Roccolo Grassi Amarone is a phenomenal wine and a perfect example of why this estate is considered one of the absolute benchmarks for modern, elegant Amarone. Marco Sartori is a master of his craft, producing wines of incredible depth and precision that challenge the stereotype of Amarone as simply a big, heavy wine. This is what I love about Roccolo Grassi: their Amarone is powerful, yes, but it’s also incredibly lifted and energetic. They are meticulous about achieving perfect ripeness during the appassimento (grape drying) process, but they ferment the wine to be almost completely dry. The residual sugar here is super low (4gr), resulting in an Amarone that is defined by its aromatic complexity and structure, not by sweetness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated: the tannins are powerful yet polished and a vibrant acidity provides a backbone of energy that carries the deep, savory fruit to an exceptionally long finish.
