A fruitier and more primary Barolo, but also nuanced and layered with some strawberries, ripe berries, grapefruit and white pepper notes. Mineral on the palate with fine austerity to the fresh, bright berry fruit. Refined and quite long, yet subtle. Drink now or hold.

Neighbouring the renowned Monvigliero MGA, the hill of San Lorenzo di Verduno may not reach the same heights – literally or figuratively – however, it does offer another worthwhile perspective of Verduno’s attractions. Pelassa’s 2021 demonstrates lovely purity and a solid yet fine frame in a midweight package. Wild strawberry, raspberry compote, bergamot and sweet spice tantalise the nose and palate with plenty of luscious acidity to buoy it. It won’t make old bones but does promise plenty of enjoyment for the next seven to eight years. (MM)

Plump and juicy raspberry, cranberry, fresh flower and chalky aromas lift from the glass. Vibrant sour plums center on the deep core of fruit found on the palate. Tannins are present, but they are supple and finish with classic Nebbiolo acidity. (JP)

A shade deeper than the 2020. Just mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Full cherry nose with the merest suggestion of fruitcake. Youthful, fresh cherry fruit layered with powdery tannins. Good length and solid style. (WS) 16+

Notes

The 2019 Pelassa San Lorenzo di Verduno Barolo is an elegant and structured wine from the finesse-driven Verduno commune. The nose is highly fragrant with red cherry, dried rose petals, and sweet spice. It is medium-to-full bodied with velvety, yet firm tannins and vibrant acidity. This is a powerful, age-worthy Barolo with a long, savory finish, typical of the concentrated 2019 vintage.
