1988 Caillou, Sauternes

1988 Caillou, Sauternes

Notes

Tracing its history through nearly a century of ownership by the Ballan family, Château Caillou is a distinguished Second Growth located on the high plateau of Barsac. The estate takes its name from the unusual "cailloux" (stones) and large limestone boulders that litter its vineyards, creating a unique subsoil that forces vine roots deep into the earth for nutrients. This terroir, a mix of red sand, clay, and fractured limestone, is celebrated for imparting a signature mineral elegance and "nervous" acidity to its sweet wines. The 1988 vintage is widely considered a "vintage of the century" for the region, defined by a perfect sugar-to-acid ratio and exceptional aromatic intensity. Primarily composed of Sémillon with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc, this wine captures the classic Barsac profile of honeyed richness balanced by a vibrant, refreshing lift.
