Serra is always the more austere Serralunga Barolo from Giovanni Rosso; it deserves time and is not an easy wine. The nose is focused on earthy clay minerality, violet, dill, liquorice, dried cherry and peony. There's nice delicacy first due to graceful acidity, with elegant tannins at the fore but then a thick end, with massive sternness and an orangey character. A modern Barolo with old-fashioned typicity. (AF)

inear and focused, this opens with aromas recalling tobacco, forest floor botanical herb and graphite along with a whiff of blue flower. Aged in large French casks, the youthfully austere palate has an almost knife-like precision, exhibiting juicy raspberry, Morello cherry and crushed mint alongside a coffee bean note. Firm, tightly knit tannins provide support. (KO)

The 2019 Barolo Serra is bright and sculpted in feel. Brisk acids and veins of tannin give the 2019 gorgeous translucent energy. Orange peel, crushed rocks, mint and cinnamon all grace this vibrant, linear Barolo from Davide Rosso. Give this a year or two in bottle. (AG)

Very pretty with violets, black cherries, and raspberry aromas that follow through to a medium body with well-integrated tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Better in 2026.

Notes

The 2019 Giovanni Rosso "Serra" Barolo is an exquisite, single-vineyard expression that masterfully balances the vintage's structural power with the characteristic perfume and refinement of the Serra cru in La Morra. The nose is highly complex and alluring, offering concentrated aromas of red cherry, violet, and dried mint, beautifully integrated with savory layers of iron, dark spice, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied and densely woven, showcasing a core of pristine fruit framed by firm, yet velvety tannins and a bright, invigorating acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, pure, and tightly focused, emphasizing the site's chalky, mineral signature. This is a profound and elegant Barolo built for the cellar, demanding patience to fully reveal its depth.
