The drop-dead gorgeous Gianni Brunelli stopped me in my tracks with its stunning fragrance of freshly picked violet, iris, forest berry, leather and eucalyptus. All about extreme elegance, the palate is equally captivating, delivering layers of succulent Morello cherry, wild raspberry, blood orange, dark spice and crushed mint. Taut, ultra-refined tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and impeccably balanced. While it’s already incredibly tempting, it also promises years of graceful aging. Hats off to Laura Brunelli and her team. (KO)

Pouring a bright red hue, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is persistent and fantastic, with youthful tension and expressive aromatics of Bing cherries, orange zest, and iron-tinged earth. The palate is medium-bodied and focused, with refined tannins, refreshing acidity, and savory length framed by salty earth and bright fruit through the finish. It’s a complete, elegant Brunello that should continue to improve with time in bottle. Drink 2027-2047. (AF)

Dried flowers mix with crushed rocks, grilled herbs and spiced orange peels as the darkly alluring 2021 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up from the glass. The wine is polished in feel, silken and serene with a harmonious mix of tantalizing acidity, minerals and ripe red and black fruits. While tannic, the tannins are round and refined, leaving a classically dry sensation as hints of licorice and cedary spice fade. (EG)

Bright cherry, raspberry, rose hip and wild herb flavors highlight this sleek, linear red. Though tightly wound, this persists with intense flavors midpalate and into the long finish. Charming and balanced, though a few years to integrate will do this good. (BS)

Securing an allocation of Gianni Brunelli is always a race against time, but with the perfect 100-point score from Kerin O'Keefe for this 2021 vintage, it has become the ultimate "unicorn" of the year. This is a pre-arrival opportunity to secure a piece of Montalcino history before it physically lands and inevitably disappears. To understand why this wine is so profound, you have to look at the unique architecture of the estate. Laura Brunelli, who has managed the winery with incredible passion since Gianni’s passing, masters a blend of two distinct and complementary terroirs that is unlike anything else in the region. The heart of the estate is the "Le Chiuse di Sotto" vineyard in the north. This is sacred ground—ancestral lands of the Biondi Santi family—sitting at 320 meters elevation. Here, the soils are cool, rich in clay, and ventilated by constant breezes. This site provides the "nervous system" of the wine: the high-toned aromatics, the electric acidity, and the vibrant energy that makes Brunelli so distinct.

Notes

The 2021 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino is a triumph from one of Montalcino's most cherished traditional estates, capturing the energy, structure, and finesse of this stellar vintage. The nose is deep, polished, and beautifully complex, offering pure aromas of sun-drenched wild cherry, blood orange, and faded rose, beautifully layered with savory notes of cedary spice, licorice, and dusty, mineral earth. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied and seamlessly textured, showcasing a concentrated core of ripe red and black fruits framed by fine-grained, silken tannins and a harmonious, tantalizing acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, serene, and classically dry, leaving an elegant mineral and spiced citrus impression. This is a wonderfully balanced, cellar-worthy Brunello that expertly combines power and grace.
