Super-fragrant aromatics of rose petal, clove, and cardamom lead the way, followed by black cherry, graphite, and a touch of diced tarragon. The palate is defined by supple black tea-like tannins and succulent acidity, creating a wine that is both lifted and grounded. Sourced from the Soberanes Vineyard—owned by the Pisoni and Franscioni families and situated on the Santa Lucia Highlands bench near the iconic Garys’ Vineyard—the grapes are hand-picked, fermented with native yeasts in French oak, and aged for 11 months in 45% new barrels. Perfumes of hibiscus and rose petals lift the well-structured, balanced flavors of brambleberries and fresh cherries. A quiet citrus note of blood oranges sweeps in on the midpalate and through the finish. Fresh herbs as well. Very textural with impressive length, acidity and complexity. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard wears its 30% whole clusters to great effect. A sweet core of blueberry fruit, grilled rosemary, tobacco, rose stem and black pepper intensifies with air. This is a voluptuous, seamless wine with understated power. Soberanes’ hallmark rocky minerality emerges on the finish. Excellent. (BN)
