Made in a hot year, but not showing the effects of the weather, this comes from vineyards in Villalba, Briones and Torremontalbo and is another brilliant release from María Larrea. Savoury, sweet and well balanced, with 15% Graciano adding extra backbone and the zest that you expect from this special red.

Decanter

Glorious and typical fine oak, raspberry and cherry charm on the nose. Bright in the palate, definitely showing signs of its maturity, with softer tannins and refined leather notes. Long finish. *Gold Medal - 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards*

The wine that represents the traditional and serious reds from Haro, the 2012 Imperial Gran Reserva is a classical blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo that matured in barrel for two years. It has a textbook serious Haro nose, with dark spices, ripe fruit, something balsamic and a round, full-bodied palate within the straight and serious style of the wine. 2012 was a warm year, but the wines are fresher than those from 2011. This has fine, slightly grainy tannins with good grip. A textbook Imperial Gran Reserva. (LG)

A tight and beautiful wine with blackberries, bramble berries, rose petals and lemon grass. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Very fine-grained. Lovely now.

Notes

Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) is one of Spain’s most influential and historic wineries, founded in 1879 by brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa in the famed Barrio de la Estación in Haro, Rioja Alta. Over its nearly century-and-a-half of operation, CVNE has remained family-run and has played a major role in shaping modern Rioja winemaking, becoming known for innovations such as gravity-flow winery design and building some of the first temperature-controlled fermentation facilities in the region. Among CVNE’s most renowned achievements is its Imperial line, which represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craftsmanship and is produced only in exceptional vintages. The Imperial Gran Reserva is sourced from high-altitude, older vineyards in Rioja Alta that provide concentrated fruit and naturally balanced acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before undergoing traditional fermentation and extended ageing in both American and French oak barrels. After two years in barrel, the wine continues to mature in bottle within CVNE’s deep underground cellars. The result is a classic, age-worthy Rioja with layered aromas of dark fruit, spice, leather, and balsamic notes supported by polished tannins. Over time, Imperial Gran Reserva has become one of Spain’s most collectible wines and a benchmark for the Gran Reserva category.
