Review Date: 10/2025Note: from recently replanted vines totaling 1.04 ha; aged in 50% wood but only a small percentage is new. As is often the case with the Droin Valmur, the nose instantly makes clear that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis. On the palate there is more volume, power and weight, if not nearly the same refinement, to the rich and caressing bigger-bodied flavors, all wrapped in an impressively persistent and balanced finale. Like several wines in the range, this too would benefit from having more depth so I would advise allowing it at least mid-term cellaring.

The 2024 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, classically Chablisien in profile this year, opens from the glass with aromas of spring flowers, oyster juice, lemon oil and nashi pear. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, notably concentrated in the context of the vintage and racy, concluding with a long, saline finish. Attaining 12% alcohol at harvest, it has turned out very nicely.
This long-established domaine, encompassing 28 hectares, is directed by Benoît Droin. Farming remains conventional; however, since 2010, the soils have been worked mechanically, and synthetic treatments are kept to a minimum. Harvest is early and partially mechanized, followed by fermentation and élevage conducted predominantly in stainless steel, though oak barrels are also employed in proportions that vary by cuvée, ranging from 25% to 50% for the premiers and grands crus.(KK)

Valmur has 35% oak in the blend. Pale lemon yellow. A broader fruit across the nose though still with some marine notes. There is impressive depth on the palate, everything in place, with an extra layer of fruit right at the back. The acidity holds up nicely. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Jun 2025.

The 2024 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru is another cuvée that is reticent at the moment. This has light chalk dust, petrichor scents and less in the way of fruit concentration. It's probably too austere for some. The palate is well balanced, with decent weight, touches of nectarine and citrus lemon and a dab of white pepper. This doesn't quite kick on toward the finish.(NM)
