91+ points. Their village red from younger vines he planted in different parts of Briones is the 2022 Viñas Jóvenes, a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 3% Garnacha. The fruit profile is darker, which I think is a constant in 2022. The wine has 14.5% alcohol and good freshness and acidity, keeping the balance and poise, with a serious palate and abundant chalky tannins. It matured in 225- and 500-liter barrels for 14 months. There's an earthy, slightly farmyardy note on the nose here, which may put some people off, but it sort of works in the context of the wine. Marrying Tempranillo and 8% Graciano from vineyards that are less than 25 years' old, it's savoury, spicy and lightly wooded with succulent red berry sweetness.

The 2022 Viñas Jóvenes, Tempranillo with 4% Graciano from Briones, Rioja Alta, aged for one year in used barrels. The nose is bright and expressive, with blackberry and appealing touches of oaky flavors such as amaretti and soft spice. Dry and juicy with gentle tannins and lush fruit, the palate is flavorful and textured. The finish is redolent with fresh plum. The 2022 is a delicious, vibrant red. (JH)

The Viñas Jóvenes is Miguel Merino’s “village” wine, crafted from younger vines (between 10 and 25 years of age) and designed to show off the personality of the village of Briones where the winery is located. These are vines in training, in a sense, waiting to grow old enough to be included in the Reserva or Gran Reserva, yet in the interim produce readily accessible, highly enjoyable wines bursting with exuberant red fruit notes framed by a delicately savory quality. Made from 92% Tempranillo, with smaller amounts of Graciano and Garnacha, the wine ages for 12 months in second use barrels as well as 500L casks, to emphasize the youthful fruit and not cloak it in oak. Ready to drink now, with juicy fruit notes and lively acidity, this is hardly a trivial wine, however. Rather, it has a surprising amount of concentration for such a well-priced bottle, with a noticeable Miguel Merino thumbprint of elegance, finesse and restrained energy pulsing through the core of the wine, just like its older siblings.

It's super nice to see the return of this line to our portfolio. The Miguel Merino wines have always been ones of excellent quality with attention to detail. This "entry level" version is cherry- fruit dominant with sweet and bright red cherries on the palate. There are also some nicely traditional elements of (lightly) rustic spices, crushed lavender, aromatic cedar. It starts out deep and finishes brightly. It is a hugely enjoyable rioja that has just enough traditional elements blended with a softer and more accessible style.
A beautifully modern Rioja that still respects its roots. Bright red cherry, crushed raspberry, dried herbs, and subtle baking spice lead the way, while the palate stays energetic and precise rather than overly oaked or heavy. There’s a purity to the fruit here that makes the wine feel incredibly alive, backed by silky tannins and a streak of earthy minerality that adds depth. The “Viñas Jóvenes” bottling showcases the freshness and vibrancy of younger vines without sacrificing complexity. Elegant, soulful, and dangerously easy to keep drinking.

Notes

Vinas Jovenes is the young vine bottling from Miguel Merino. Sourced from several vineyard where, in the last 25 years, they have started replanting vineyards in sites around the village of Briones. This is mostly Tempranillo with a little Graciano and Garnacha. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then is aged in used barrels for one year. The barrels were previously used for their Reserva wine, and the staves are made from American oak and the heads from French oak. The wine is then bottled and left to age for one additional year before release. This wine easily qualifies as a Crianza but is not labeled so. This is a wine about the region and varietals first, not how it is aged. This young and fresh Rioja boasts bright fruit tones, subtly framed with oak and accented with herbs, spice, and earth.
