2022 Hosanna, Pomerol

James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2025Extremely aromatic and floral, showing dried violets and blackberry and strawberry character. Full-bodied and creamy with very fine tannins that give a caressing, silky texture that is long and persistent. Exotic in many ways but so polished. A wine of contrasts. Made from old vines. 74% merlot and 26% cabernet franc.

A riper, full-bodied, sexy Hosanna, the 2022 Château Hosanna checks in as 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, coming from a tiny 4.5 hectares of blue clay soils on the upper plateau in Pomerol. Ripe blackberries, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and graphite notes all define the aromatics, and it has a wealth of fruit, a rich, unctuous mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a blockbuster finish. Its tannins are just about completely covered by its massive fruit, but this will benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age (you'll be excused for drinking a bottle today) and have three decades of longevity.

The 2022 Hosanna is a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, sporting a deep garnet-purple color. After a swirl or two the most gorgeous perfume of red roses, juicy black cherries, and black raspberries erupts from the glass, followed by wafts of crushed rocks, cast iron pan, and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate is very tightly wound with loads of bright red and black fruit layers, framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Beautiful. From a vineyard well up on the plateau of Pomerol, this is 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc. I find fragrant summer berries on the nose here, red cherry and raspberry, crushed and concentrated, layered with Cabernet complexities, juniper and mint, as well as streaks of pomegranate molasses, toast and cigar box. I certainly find it enticing, and the palate does not disappoint, although it moves away from the fragrant perfume of the nose to present darker layers of fruit, all blackberry, currant and smoky pepper, with a sense of freshness despite the dark chocolate and tarry tones, and with time scented notes of rose and violet reappear, touching base with the aromatic profile. Lovely tannic structure here, ripe, toasted, tight-knit but evident, clearly marking this one out as for the cellar. A big step up in the Moueix portfolio with this wine.
