The most youthful colour amongst the Charmes-Chambertins, a fresh crimson purple. Some slightly beery notes at first on the nose, but then powerful floral and raspberry notes take over. The fruit develops really well on the palate, to leave a fresh vigorous yet also generous fruit at the end. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Sep 2023.

Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable at present. There is however good freshness to the slightly bigger and richer yet still quite sleek flavors that possess focused power on the impressively precise, youthfully austere and quite serious finish. This doesn't have quite the same grace as the Combottes but it's definitely a quality effort as it's built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least half a dozen years of patience first while rewarding 15+.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is relatively high-toned on the nose with glossy black cherries and violet scents. It doesn't quite articulate the terroir as well as its peers—more winemaking in evidence. The palate has a juicy, rounded, low acid entry. Quite plump (somehow, I imagine this wine as being “pear-shaped”), it misses some tension and mineralité on the finish. Possibly this was picked a day too late? Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.(NM)

More perfumed than the Combottes, with floral and fruit purity interlaced. There’s a sweetness of red fruit in the aroma even without any unwanted sweetness on the palate, which is marked by a savoury quality that is perhaps partly oak but also with a slight earthiness. Dry, dry but very fine tannins. You have to take this slowly because it is really subtle and very very long. Utmost beauty in the tannins. I could drink this now but not sure I dare put the start of the drinking window as 2021 when it isn’t even bottled. 18/20 points (JH)
