The 2023 Saint-Romain Sous la Velle offers aromas of grapefruit, pear and white peach framed by a deft touch of smoky reduction. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and textural, with plenty of chalky extract, it’s laden with racy acids and concludes with a long, saline, lemon-tinged finish. As ever, it derives from the estate’s largest plot—two hectares of 60-year-old vines rooted in shallow soil. Saint-Romain's contemporary reference point, brothers Franck and Frédérick preside over this 20-hectare domaine, producing characterful, stylish wines in both colors. The Buisson family has been estate bottling since 1947 and farming organically since the late 1940s, forerunners in both respects. After a brief period of more conventional farming during the 1980s and 1990s, the estate has since reaffirmed its commitment to organic viticulture and now holds both organic (since 2008) and biodynamic (since 2018) certifications.(WK)

The 2023 Saint-Romain Sous Le Velle has a well-defined nose with lemon, Granny Smith and wet pavement scents that gain intensity in the glass, though it's never powerfully aromatic. The palate is lively on the entry with Clementine and peach skin notes. Certainly spicier than the Perrières, this has quite a complex finish with fine length. This is a strong follow-up to the excellent 2022.(NM)

Mid lemon yellow. Recently sulphured which has slightly blocked the nose for the moment. More backward but perhaps with greater depth of fruit, fresh citrus on top of orchard fruit. Excellent length once again. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Oct 2024.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "The heart of the valley, more clay here, also the oldest vines of the domaine, almost 80 but other plantings too – more than 2 hectares in the middle of the slopeWide an impression of citrus bitters in this width of aroma. Extra wide, extra focus, extra intensity. Extra in all directions! A wine with a sappy finishing intensity – so persistent. A baby wine and a great St.Romain."(03/2025)
