Wine Advocate
Reviewed January 2022Aromas of red berries, plums, rose petals, sweet spices and forest floor introduce the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless wine that's layered and concentrated, with a vibrant core of fruit and a long, penetrating finish. Burghound
Admirably discreet wood influence can be found on the markedly cooler and more restrained yet wonderfully diverse aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet, leather and whispers of the sauvage. There is excellent volume to the dense, powerful and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, lengthy and expressly built-to-age finale. This is a ripe but classically style LSJ that should amply reward extended keeping. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*

A deep glowing purple, with a wealth of sensual, ripe fruit, building nicely in the glass. Not too exotic on the palate though there is a chocolate note to finish, medium acidity, well ripened tannins. Quite forward, showing a fruit which will please.

Vinous
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a refined bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with delineated raspberry and cranberry fruit and a hint of Earl Grey in the background. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, rounded, dense and weighty for a Premier Cru, although it doesn't quite have the tension or nuance of the best. The finish feels a little heavy-handed with the oak, although that should be subsumed with time. It misses a bit of flair, hence my lower score, but it should improve with bottle age, hence the plus sign. (NM) 92+
