Pouring a ruby red color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Fort Ross-Seaview is ripe on the nose with notes of black raspberries, pressed flowers, sweet sage, and forest earth. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a compact structure, savory mineral accents that frame the palate, fantastic, elegant length, and a good tension. Drink 2026-2040.

The Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot Noir is sourced from a focused selection of estate blocks and clones, primarily Pommard and 777. The grapes were harvested in the second week of October 2023, about three weeks later than in 2022. The unusually long, cool season produced low yields of just 1.5–2 tons per acre, resulting in a wine that is highly aromatic and packed with flavours. Tart blackberries and other darker-toned fruits lead, layered with savoury herbs, a subtle citrus lift, and a forest-floor note that wraps it all together. The palate is lifted, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity carrying through to a long, saline-tinged finish. (ACQ)

An evocative coastal expression that is super spicy and floral on the nose, with red rose petals and fresh cherries throughout. On the palate, orange peel, citrus oil, forest floor and raspberries. Touches of peppercorns and baking spices in the finish. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold.

Happy New Year! And what a way to kick it off with stunningly good pricing on these rocking estate-grown wines from Fort Ross Vineyard! Our special Insider's Advantage pricing gets you more than 50% off the typical SRP even on this brand new 2023 release with monster scores! Don't confuse this wine with the less expensive, non-estate "Sea Slopes" bottling. This is the prime, estate-grown, Fort Ross Estate Vineyard bottling from 30-year-old mature vines, planted right on the west Sonoma coast. As pioneers of the region, Lester and Linda Schwartz first established a vineyard in 1988. After many years of experimentation and learning, they hand-chose a few heritage selections and Dijon clones to plant out the several dozen small blocks of this mountainous estate in 1994. The 2023 Estate Pinot Noir is comprised of Swan, Calera, Pommard, and Dijon 115 clones. Winemaker Jeff Pisoni (son of legendary winemaker Gary Pisoni) picked the fruit some 2-3 weeks later than normal due to the long, cool growing season. The wine was then matured for 11 months in 30% new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright, sappy red fruits, and dried flowers are lifted on the nose. More brambly components and coastal forest floor hints mingle with deep, briary red berry fruits and spiced cherry compote on the palate, There's real depth and power here but without losing it's focus, and vibrant energy. Perfectly ripe and with great fruit but also not shying away from some more sauvage, wild, cool-climate characteristics that make this wines so complex and intriguing. A beautiful bottle of wine with a long life ahead of it if you don't drink it all first!

Notes

Fort Ross Vineyard was planted in 1994 by Lester and Linda Schwartz. The vines grow in the coastal mountains of the far west Sonoma Coast less than one mile from the Pacific Ocean. The elevation of the vineyard keeps it just out of the daily fog at 1,200 - 1,700 feet. The wines are expertly crafted by Jeff Pisoni. The 2023 Pinot Noir is composed of heritage clonal selections: Swan, Calera, Pommard, and Dijon 115.  The wine matured for 11 months on French oak, 30% new, for 11 months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
