A beautifully fresh young wine with raspberries, blackcurrants, violets and lavender. Minerally. More blue fruit than in the past. Very racy and fine with a medium to full body and flavors of blue fruit, such as raspberry and blueberry The tannins show lovely harmony and precision. Vertical with energy. Drink after 2029.

The 2021 Argentiera leaps from the glass with lots of noble Mediterranean personality upfront. A youthful dark red hue, it boasts notes of dark stones, blackcurrants, fresh tobacco, lavender, and crushed sage. The palate offers the richest of the three vintages of this wine that I tasted at the estate. Full-bodied, it has rich extract along with a youthful, fruity cushion of fruit, supple, velvety tannins, and a long finish with a bit of meaty richness as well as a mouthwatering touch of saline. It deserves a few more years in bottle to give it time to improve and should age slowly over the coming 20 or more years. (AF)

The Argentiera 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Argentiera (a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is quite dense and rich, showing the bold intensity of the vintage in no uncertain terms. The wine feels too extracted to my tastes and marks quite a step up in richness compared to the thinner 2022 vintage that I tasted at the same time. The bouquet offers blackberry liqueur and syrupy black cherry with spicy notes. The tannins are fleshed out for the most part, with a point of bitterness that still needs to settle. The 2022 is thinner and easier to drink, but this 2021 needs a few more years of bottle age to iron out. 95+

Tenuta Argentiera occupies a spot in the hills at around 200 metres above sea level. This 2021 is a big wine, packed full of structural mass and bold, sticky black fruits with some sous bois and mint aromatics. The plentiful tannins are well rounded, and the overall perception is that this is a quality wine that's still very youthful and needs time to blossom. (JB)

Notes

The 2021 Tenuta Argentiera Bolgheri Superiore is a superb and polished Super Tuscan blend (primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc), recognized for its elegance and the distinctive freshness imparted by the estate’s high-altitude, seaside location. The 2021 vintage is particularly lauded for its beautiful balance and racy energy. The nose is deep, clean, and highly aromatic, offering a core of blue and black fruits (blackberry liqueur, cassis, raspberry) beautifully intertwined with refined notes of violet, lavender, cedar, and sweet tobacco. There is a sophisticated, subtle balsamic and minty lift. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied, vibrant, and linear, yet possesses a dense, velvety texture. The dark, concentrated fruit flavors are framed by firm, precisely-defined tannins and a lively acidity, giving the wine a vertical and energetic feel. The finish is exceptionally long, mineral, and persistent, echoing with notes of spice, licorice, and iron. This is a refined and powerful Bolgheri Superiore that demands cellaring to fully integrate its components, promising immense complexity over the next 15-20 years.
