Beronia is based in Ollauri, Rioja Alta, and sources fruit from more than 900ha of vineyards, all within 10km of its winery on a range of soils including clay-limestone, ferrous clay and alluvial; vines are aged from 20 years to some on pre-phylloxera rootstock dating back more than 100 years. The 2020 Reserva is predominantly Tempranillo and was matured for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, followed by additional time in third-use French barrels, and then at least 18 months more in the bottle before release. Very pretty raspberry fruit defines this wine, which is very fresh with bright acidity and soft, ripe tannins. Oak is very well integrated and this is an elegant and fine reserva with a chalky lift. It takes no little talent and focus to make 1.3 million bottles of a commercially produced wine that's as good as this assemblage of Tempranillo and 4% Graciano. Aged in mixed French and American oak barrels, this has crunchy plum and blueberry fruit, sweet mocha oak and wellintegrated tannins.

Subtle sweet spices and vanilla complement the red berries, plums and citrus. It has a medium body, with linear, firm tannins and a long, juicy finish. Balance is key here. (ZS)

Notes

Bodegas Beronia was established in 1973 by a group of Basque friends passionate about gastronomy. Located in the Rioja Alta sub-region, Beronia’s style is rooted in the traditions of Rioja but embraces innovation. One example of this is their pioneering use of mixed-oak barrels, combining American oak staves and French oak heads to achieve a unique blend of spice, vanilla, and subtle elegance. They focus on creating classic, food-friendly Rioja wines, primarily from Tempranillo blended with Graciano and Mazuelo for structure and aromatic complexity.
