2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Meursault 1er Cru "Santenots"

Decanter
Review Date: 01/2025Guillaume d'Angerville farms more than a hectare of white grapes in Santenots, originally planted with Chardonnay by his grandfather, Sem d'Angerville, in 1905. He maintains the tradition in fine form, and the 2023 is a delight, with ripe, buttery apple fruit aromas and a hint of hazelnut. The texture is rich and supple, luxurious rather than racy, yet this wine will begin to open in three to five years but should also have the substance to age for the long term.(CC)

Pale colour, the fruit has a waxy lemon note to it medium bodied, though with good intensity towards the back of the palate, indeed this does have impressive persistence. The fruit is generous enough, apple and persimmon, to cover the bones, with a light citrus wash to finish. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

Offering up aromas of pear, orange zest and freshly baked bread, the 2023 Meursault 1er Cru Santenots is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a succulent, charming profile. More immediate than its 2022 predecessor, this will drink well young.
Guillaume d'Angerville and technical director François Duvivier began the harvest on September 4, 2023, picking only in the mornings, reporting yields no higher than in 2022. Supple, sensual and fragrant, these wines will offer a broad drinking window. As I've written before, followers of d'Angerville will be familiar with the protocol here: biodynamic farming, destemmed grapes, classical macerations and élevage in barrels—of which some 20% are new, with older barrels generally being retained for five vintages. These have always been seriously long-lived wines, but contemporary d'Angerville isn't quite as backward and slow to evolve as the wines were in the days of Guillaume d'Angerville's father. The use of barrels with a somewhat younger average age—even if percentages of new wood remain very modest—gives them a slightly glossier patina, especially in their youth.(WK)

Note: from a parcel of 30+ year old vines in Les Plures. A notably more floral-suffused nose is comprised by notes of the essence of pear and apple compote. Once again there is good volume and a caressing mouthfeel to the medium weight flavors that possess markedly more size, weight and depth on the balanced and firmer finale. This has sufficient stuffing to repay 3 to 5 years of keeping.
