2023 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds"

Review Date: 01/2025There's not a lot of older vines here, despite the riveting complexity. One-third is approximately 47 years old and the rest is nine years old. It's a show-down of age versus terroir, and terroir wins. Ripe on the nose with cherry compote, raspberry coulis and savory spice, there is rambunctious, enthralling and salivating acidity to carry the XL-sized fruit generosity. The clear tension doesn't over-power the wine. Bravo!

Between crimson and purple, with the sublime bouquet of ripe fruit, picked just the right side of the line. The structure is much more pronounced, both in tannins and acidity, with some orange zest rippling through the succulent red fruit. A contrast to the more ethereal style of Caillerets. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

Taillepieds is at the core of Volnay – along with the Clos des Chênes to the south and Champans and Caillerets across the road, it is among the very best. The 2023 shows a firm tannic grip and a substantial, almost astringent character. Guillaume d'Angerville speculates it is the soil – clay at the top of the slope and white marl further down. The expressive fruit has aromas of plum and mulberry that open up on the palate and linger on the impressively long finish.(CC)

Note: from a 1.07 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines. This is aromatically similar to the Caillerets if more floral in character. There is outstanding vibrancy and delineation to the equally beautifully textured medium weight flavors that are akin to rolling a tiny pebble around the mouth, all wrapped in a moderately austere and impressively persistent finale. While perhaps slightly riper than a classic Taillepieds, this is nonetheless excellent with the development potential to match. If you can find it, buy it.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*
