2013 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon" Extra Brut Rosé Champagne
97
Vinous
Review Date: 04/2025The 2013 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is much more exuberant than the 2012, even though on the surface, that does not exactly align with the respective vintages. The decision to use a bit more new oak, more still red wine and a touch higher dosage to soften the natural austerity of the year paid off handsomely. Rose petal, blood orange, spice and kirsch confer a decidedly exotic flair. The ample, substantial finish is striking. Dosage is 4.4 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2024. (AG)

This top end rosé, from the masters of the style at Billecart is one of the best in the world. The production is limited by the red wine used in the blend- it is only sourced from one over 80 year old Pinot Noir vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay, the Vallefroy. It is composed of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay from the best villages in Champagne; Mesnil, Cramant, Oger, Bouzy, Ay and of course Mariuel. It has been aged for an incredible 115 months on the lees and dosed at 4.4g/l. The cool 2013 harvest is the only October harvest in a generation, and gives a chance to have a style that is disapearing as the climate heats up. These wines go the distance! -Gary Westby, K&L
