Vinous

Review Date: 12/2013

The 2004 d'Alceo is off the charts. Freshly cut flowers, mint and dark red berries are all finely knit in a fabric of superb elegance and pure pedigree. It is fascinating to watch the evolution of Vigna d'Alceo from a wine of power to a wine of finesse, and 2004 is the inflection point in that arc. The silkiest and most refined tannins imaginable support an impeccable, layered finish peppered with dark red/black fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and savory herbs. Simply put, the 2004 is stunning. Displays gorgeous, focused aromas of blackberry, currant and sandalwood. Full-bodied and tightly wound, with velvety tannins and a long finish of mineral, light fresh rosemary and currant. Solid as a rock. *Collectible*

Wine Advocate

The 2004 D’Alceo (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot) is even better. It is deceptively rounder and softer than the Sammarco in its expression of cassis, minerals, licorice and sweet, dark fruit. Despite the lushness of its fruit there is plenty of structure lurking underneath, and it will require significant patience before offering its finest drinking. It is one of the highlights of the vintage. (AG)

Int'l Wine Cellar

Review Date: 08/2010
Deeply pitched aromas of blackcurrant, violet, licorice, minerals and oak, along with a whiff of truffle. Enters lively and minerally, then turns broad in the middle palate, displaying terrific density of blackberry and dark cherry flavors. Wonderfully classy and vibrant wine with a seamless texture. The long finish boasts compelling subtle sweetness of fruit. This is consistently one of Italy's best wines, and the 2004 is one of the top vintages for this bottling in recent memory. (ID)

Notes

Antonio Galloni writes for Wine Advocate: "High-density vineyards, biodynamic farming and low yields are the hallmarks of the wines of Castello dei Rampolla, located in the prestigious Conca d’Oro in Panzano. Despite its elegant name Castello di Rampolla is a small, family-run property with a decidedly artisanal approach to working in both the vineyards and the cellar. The estate produces big, concentrated wines with imposing tannic structures that have proven to be extremely ageworthy." (01/2007)
