James Suckling

Review Date: 03/2024

Ripe cherries, red plums, dried orange peel, spices and hints of chocolate on the nose. Velvety and creamy on the palate with a medium body and fine tannins. It shows good volume, but fades rather quickly at the end. Better after two to three years.

Lifted aromas of fresh raspberries and cherries mingle with dried cranberries and red currants, accompanied by leaf and herbal notes on the nose. The palate is plush and fruit-forward, yet supported by a focused core of acidity, fine-grained tannins, and subtle minerality, lending a sense of precision and linearity to the palate. Drink now through 2035. (JP)

Jancis Robinson

The hallmark of Marrone Barolos is, for me, breathtaking limpidity and deep-stone minerality. Each and every one of them has the liquid-ruby quality of dawn sunlight pouring through a red stained-glass window, pooling on a cool, ancient stone floor. This Barolo cuvée is not a cru but it's no exception. It smells of bruised peony petals after a summer storm. It tastes like kissing cherry-stained lips and cold cellar stones. It feels like lichen on an old damson tree. Damsons, moss and ferns and stones. (TC) 17

Notes

The 2020 Marrone Barolo is a classic and elegant expression of Nebbiolo, balancing the grace of its fruit with a well-defined structure. The nose is delicate and highly expressive, with notes of dried rose, violet, ripe red cherry, and raspberry, enriched by tertiary hints of licorice, dark chocolate, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it’s elegant and silky, with a medium-to-full body and a velvety texture. The fine-grained, well-integrated tannins are supported by a vibrant acidity that balances its power and highlights its freshness. The finish is long, persistent, and harmonious, with a pleasant return of red fruit and spice. A Barolo of great balance, offering immediate drinkability alongside excellent aging potential.
