Very toasty with lots of caramelized pear aromas, this dry pinot gris is at once generous and lively on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Lots of power and energy. No hint of alcohol, which is a real achievement for this grape in a warm vintage. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Pinot Gris Les Caracoles is from the lieu-dit of Schneckeltor, just underneath the Altenbourg, with clay on limestone. The shy nose only allows brief glimpses of smoky pear with just a touch of creaminess. The palate is wonderfully dry and fresh, with the sinew of Pinot Gris but none of the bulk. This is beautifully defined and bone dry. The 2023 is austere now but will fill out with time. (Bone-dry)(AK)

Notes

93pts Ian d'Agata Wine: "Good full yellow. Delicately smoky aromas and flavours of apple sauce, pear, and puff pastry. Long and lovely, this drinks simple and straightforward. What’s there not to like? ‘Caracolles’ is the ancient name of the snail, or escargot in more modern French (while the Alsatian name ins Schnakator). The vines are located in the bottom of the Altembourg where there is lots of water thanks to the stronger clay nature of the soil there. Gorgeous with salmon and anything involving mushrooms. Drinking window: 2026-2031."(10/2025)
