The 2005 Pingus is the most powerful of this series (power being a major characteristic of the top 2005s in the DO). It offers up a perfume beginning to develop some complexity, terrific volume and richness on the palate, and a lengthy, pure finish. This is a great wine that should have a 40 year lifespan. (JM)

Ruby-red. Suave, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry-cola aromas slowly unfold to display anise, graphite, smoky bacon and roasted coffee. Deeply concentrated but improbably elegant, with lively red and dark fruit favors supported by silky tannins and braced by fresh minerality. In no way a blockbuster, this finishes with outstanding persistence and insinuating cassis and mineral qualities. Much more about finesse and balance than size or brute force. One has to lament the price. (JR)

Less immediately charming on the nose than the Flor de Pingus but the violet perfume emerges gradually in the glass. Structured but tannins already starting to melt. Cool and fresh and then the power of the thick chocolate tannins kicks in on the powerful finish. (JH) 18/20

Notes

The legendary cult wine Pingus is the creation of the visionary Danish winemaker, Peter Sisseck. Arriving in the Ribera del Duero region in Spain in the early 1990s, Sisseck began his own project in 1995, naming the wine "Pingus" after his childhood nickname. He had already developed a reputation as a winemaker to watch from his previous position at Hacienda Monasterio, but the release of Pingus anointed him as one of the most famous and innovative winemakers in Spain. Made from incredibly low-yielding, old-vine Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), Pingus is a reflection of Sisseck's philosophy that centers on biodynamic viticulture and meticulous craftsmanship to create a wine that balances power and elegance. The debut 1995 vintage of Pingus achieved instant fame when wine critic Robert Parker gave it an unheard-of high score, cementing its status as one of the world's most sought-after and expensive wines, a reputation further amplified when a large part of that first vintage destined for the US was famously lost in a shipwreck. Each vintage has only gained in popularity, and Pingus remains one of the most sought-after wines in Spain, from any region.
