From the cooler Ovello in the cool 2018 vintage, this classic Barbaresco is highlighted by developed aromas of smoke, medicinal herbs, violet and earthy minerality. A bony style with firm tannins prevails on the palate, showing some austerity with a blood orange flavour and savoury aftertaste with a touch of mint. (AF)

Plenty of berries, bark and dried flowers on the nose and palate. Medium to full body, creamy and rather chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Drinkable now, but needs two or three years to soften and open up. Try after 2024.

Cascina Morassino's 2018 Barbaresco Ovello is packed with wild cherry, tar, spice, menthol, new leather and a whole range of deep balsamic inflections. This is not the most classic expression of Ovello, where the wines tend to be brighter and more focused, but it is a very fine wine just the same. Readers should expect a potent Barbaresco that needs at least a few years to shine. (AG)

This wine perfectly captures the elegance and aromatic depth of the Ovello site. The nose is wonderfully expressive, with notes of sour cherry, dried rose petal, and licorice, layered with savory hints of crushed mint, tar, and a distinct, firm minerality. On the palate, it’s medium-to-full-bodied, with a core of savory red fruit framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, energetic acidity. The finish is long, persistent, and nuanced. A superb, terroir-driven Barbaresco with excellent aging potential.
