The Nicololai family has owned this estate since 1904, and while they are masters of traditional Sangiovese, this IGT label allows them to flex their winemaking muscles. "Helena" is typically a powerful blend of 80% Sangiovese with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot , selected from the estate’s best vineyard plots. In the glass, expect a deep, impenetrable ruby color. The nose is decadent and warm, offering layers of ripe blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry preserves. These fruit notes are wrapped in luxurious aromas of sweet tobacco, vanilla bean, cedar, and a touch of dark chocolate derived from aging in used French oak barriques.
