1996 Fettercairn 26 Year "Old Malt Cask 25th Annivesary" Single Hogshead Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Review Date: 02/2026

When you find a Fettercairn under an independent label like Old Malt Cask, it’s usually a standout because that signature tropical fruitiness handles the higher proof beautifully. The cooling ring process gives the spirit a distinct weight and sweetness that feels substantial on the palate without being heavy or smoky. It’s a sophisticated Highland pour that manages to be both refreshing and complex, offering a different kind of fruit-forward profile than what you typically find in the region. The nose on this 26 Year Old brings a touch of dunnage must behind the buttery pie crust, baked pear, lemon oil, butterscotch, and cigar box cedar. The palate is rich and oily, but fresh, with grilled pineapple, toasted coconut, honeyed pastries, and a bit of cinnamon dust, which settles over time into light toffee cream and dry, sweet sandalwood.

Notes

Old Malt Cask (OMC) is one of the most respected names in the world of independent bottling, launched in 1998 by the legendary Laing family and now managed by Hunter Laing. They are known for a "hands-off" approach that lets the true distillery character lead the way, never using chill-filtration or artificial coloring. Their signature move is bottling almost every release at a consistent 100 proof, which they believe is the perfect sweet spot for balancing bold complexity with easy drinkability. Because of their deep history in the industry, an OMC label usually means you're getting access to some of the highest quality, hand-selected barrels in Scotland. Fettercairn is a hidden gem of the Eastern Highlands, known for a unique distillation process that creates one of the cleanest, most tropical spirits in Scotland. They are famous for their "cooling rings," which spray cold mountain water down the outside of the copper stills to increase reflux during distillation. This technique ensures only the lightest vapors make it through, resulting in a house style defined by bright notes of mango, pineapple, and ginger. While they were historically a massive contributor to the Whyte & Mackay blends, their recent single malt releases have carved out a reputation for being incredibly lush and exotic.
