The darkest in color of the Grand Crus here, the nose is exotic with sumptuously ripe fruit. Black cherries, star anise, fireplace embers and turned earth create ample complexity. There is more muscle and sinew than usual here, even though the wine remains medium in body. Black tea and plums linger on the flattering, mouthcoating finish. Very impressive.

The Chapelle-Chambertin from Rossignol-Trapet is the polar opposite of its Chambertin: forward, high-toned pomegranate and cherry fruit, accented with notes of rose petal and spice. Despite the perfumed, ethereal aroma, however, there is density and depth on the palate, balanced by fresh acidity that carries the wine to a persistent finish. This should drink earlier than the Latricières. Three-quarters of the grapes are from En la Chapelle with the balance from Les Gémeaux – Rossignol-Trapet is the only domaine to have vines in both of them.(CC)

Usually it is the Chapelle-Chambertin that shows the most early aromatic fireworks chez Rossignol, but this year it has to share the stage with the beautiful Latricières. That said, the 2023 Chapell is no slouch, as it too offers up a beautiful bouquet of plums, red and black cherries, raw cocoa, a complex base of dark soil tones, mustard seed, sweet stem tones, gamebird, and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and sappy at the core, with great soil signature, ripe, chewy tannins, great focus and grip and a long, impeccably balanced and very refined and promising finish. (Drink between 2040-2100)

Note: from 25% En Gémeaux and 75% En la Chapelle. Moderate reduction overshadows the fruit but there is both good freshness and verve to the velvet-textured and generously proportioned flavors that are rich to the point of opulence before culminating in a youthfully austere dusty and impressively long finish that offers even better complexity. This is already showing well and is a wine that should reward mid to even longer-term cellaring.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "For us a warmer, more sunny area, closer to the rock. Only about 40cm of soil before the rock, but the vines are old – from the 1920s. We are the only domaine with vines in both Gemeaux and La Chapelle, and the soils are different – the soil is much deeper in Gemeaux and most of the vines at the domaine are indeed in Gemeaux, planted in the 1930s – though only 1/4 of the latter. The rows start with 1.1 metre spacing but by the end of the rows there is only 80 cm – that works only with a horse!A more structured and dark-fruited nose versus the perfume of the Latricières. More direct, very silky – oh this is classy! The extra complexity of the Latricières is obvious – here a mine that’s more of direction and structure but still very long."(01/2025)
