Rossignol-Trapet’s magnificent Chambertin 2023 is initially a bit hard to read, with aromas that are a bit reticent on the initial attack, and a monolithic texture. With time, however, one can coax an intuition of greatness here. There is enormous ripe plummy fruit with a savoury, gamey edge and hints of mineral and ground coffee. The texture is tightly wound with extract and muscular tannins that draw it out to an immensely long finish. It is wonderful wine; I would not open it for 10 years, but it will easily drink for the next 50 after that.(CC)

The 2023 Chambertin from Domaine Rossignol-Trapet was one of the most brilliant young red wines that I tasted on my trip this year. The wine’s aromatic constellation is classic and stunning, delivering scents of red and black cherries, red plums, grilled meats, a touch of Cuban tobacco, a complex foundation of black minerality, gentle spice tones, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and sappy at the core, with great focus and balance, beautiful mineral drive and a very long, vibrant and fine-grained finish. The backend lift here is stunning! (Drink between 2042-2100)

Not really any deeper in colour, an elegant ruby. Perfumed, stylish, very understated to begin with, then grows beautifully, super elegant, a refined and stylish Chambertin which captures the beauty of this terroir without exaggeration. A little oak to finish. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

Expansive on the nose, this starts with underbrush, briar, rose petals and orange peels. Ethereal and graceful, everything is nicely in place. The perky acidity wraps around the medium-bodied, sweet fruits. Black cherries abound through the sappy, singing and graciously long finish.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "A plot right in the middle of Chambertin, which takes in the full rows – bottom to top. A large width of aroma here – but calmer in style vs the previous two. Structural, a little like the Chapelle – but with a little extra comfort to the impressive volume – here the complexity takes on additional dimensions – besting the amazing middle and finishing flavours of the Latricières – it’s easily the most complete wine. Well done – that’s an excellent Chambertin!"(01/2025)
