Review Date: 11/2024

The 2021 Branco, the estate flagship, is a field blend from old (centenarian) vineyards at 600 meters in altitude and aged for 10 months in used French oak. Principal grapes include common Douro white grapes, like Rabigato, Códega, Códega do Larinho, Cerceal, Gouveio and others. Very dry, it also comes in at 12.9% alcohol. When first seen, closer to bottling, this was lovely. It still is, but it has become a bit more expressive. Bright and lively, it absorbs the wood well. There wasn't a lot six months ago, but there seems to be even less oak impact today. It's a wine that makes its way with structure and freshness more than depth or pure power, but that makes it refreshing to drink. It expands in the glass as it airs out and warms up. It is still too soon to see any real development here, but this has all arrows pointing up. It seems refined and sophisticated. It very likely has more to show, but you're going to need to cellar it for a few years to see more nuance and complexity. (MS)

Notes

Rita Ferreira Marques’s family has been growing grapes in the cool Teja valley, south of the Douro River, for generations, but Conceito was born in 2005 when she produced the family’s 1st commercial vintage. Vineyards are at high elevation or 450-600m and comprised of granitic and schistose soils. The flagship white wine is made from a field blend of about 10 di?erent traditional grape varieties, including Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Códega, Gouveio, Donzelinho Branco, Folgazão, and Arinto, sourced from a very old, pre-phylloxera vineyard on a small granite plateau .
