2022 Livio Sassetti "Pertimali" Rosso di Montalcino

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is remarkably pretty. Rosy and floral, this impresses further with its ripe cherry-berry fruits and dusty earth tones. It's silky-smooth and ripe in style, with juicy acidity and a cascade of violet inner florals. Blood orange and spice notes linger through the incredibly fresh finale. The 2022 tapers off with staining length yet only gently tannic. (AG)

This is the perfect wine to drink while you let those majestic 2019 Pertimali Brunellos rest. It comes from the same iconic estate, a staple of the northern Montosoli area, which, as you know, is all about its high-altitude, limestone-rich soils. This unique terroir is what gives all of Livio Sassetti's wines their signature freshness and precision. The 2022 vintage was hot and powerful across Montalcino, a year that could easily have produced heavy, overripe Rossos. But this is precisely where the magic of the Pertimali terroir shines. This Rosso retains a remarkable lift and vibrant, energetic character, a true testament to the estate's cool microclimate. Aged in traditional large Slavonian oak casks, this is a pure, unadulterated expression of Sangiovese. It’s not a simple, fruity red; it’s a true "baby Brunello" with fantastic structure and a long, savory, mineral-driven finish. Offer at the best price in the country, this is a case buy for the holiday season!

Notes

From one of the most esteemed names in Brunello, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino from Livio Sassetti’s Pertimali estate offers a beautifully pure expression of Sangiovese from the northern hills of Montalcino. Grown in galestro-rich soils and fermented with native yeasts, this wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, just like the estate’s Brunello, but for a shorter period to emphasize freshness and elegance. The nose is vibrant with red cherry, blood orange, violet, and savory herbs, while the palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. A textbook Rosso with pedigree, balance, and lift—ideal for earlier drinking, though it has the bones to age a few years.
