1978 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo (1.5L)

Vinous
Review Date: 11/2027With age, Bartolo Mascarello’s wines become quite delicate and Burgundian, but the 1978 still has plenty of power and structure. The vineyard sites were the same as today, Rocche dell’Annunziata, Cannubi, Rue and Cannubi/San Lorenzo, all vinified together in cement and bottled after four years. (AG)

Mascarello’s 1978 is an immensely appealing, delicate Barolo. Spiced and balsamic on the nose, it shows beautifully nuanced, sweet fruit that blossoms on the palate with an ethereal, perfumed quality, closing with great length and balance. You never know what you’re going to get with Bartolo Mascarello, but when the wines are on, they are unforgettable. (AG)

The King. 1978 is legendary for its tannic structure and immense power. Even after nearly 50 years, '78s can still feel nervous and alive. This is a monument of a wine.
Notes
*****+ - Strong and complete, intensely but delicately and harmonically scented, extraordinarily balanced strength and velvetness, suitable for a long life.
