2001 D'Oliveira Bual Madeira
96
James Suckling
Review Date: 06/2023Dense, succulent and sensual, this is a remarkable Bual Madeira with stacks of spice including toasted cumin and black pepper. Plenty of caramelized orange and dried date character, too. Packs a massive punch on the powerful palate and in the imposing finish. (SP)

Notes
D'Oliveira, officially known as Pereira D'Oliveira, is a renowned and very historic producer of Madeira with roots tracing back to 1820, founded by João Pereira D'Oliveira. The company is one of the few to survive from the pre-phylloxera era and remains family-owned, with its headquarters housed in 17th-century cellars in Funchal. D'Oliveira is celebrated for possessing one of the world's most extensive and unparalleled collections of ancient Madeira wines, some dating back to the mid-19th century. This incredible library of frasqueira wines, often bottled upon demand, includes legendary examples of Verdelho, Malvasia, Bual, and the rare Terrantez and Bastardo varieties, cementing its reputation as a guardian of Madeira's winemaking history.
