Seductive and deeply perfumed, this wine bursts with blackcurrants, cherries, and subtle spice. The crystalline acidity is immediately fresh and bright, while soft, delicate tannins create a silky texture without heaviness. It has energy and forward motion, balancing purity and precision. The Carmes signature shines through - pure fruit, supple tannins, and a long, elegant body. Flavours of cherry, damson plum, and redcurrant lead to a mineral, oyster-shell finish with a subtle salty tang. Both fresh and age-worthy, this is a beautifully framed, dynamic wine that leaves you wanting more. One of the best second wines. I love this. 31% whole bunch fermented. (GH)

The 2022 C Des Carmes Haut-Brion is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the rest 1% Petit Verdot that was fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged 12 months in a new foudre (there's a small part in used barrels) followed by four months all in concrete tanks. There are fewer stems in this cuvée as the vines are younger, and it has a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a spicy, peppery, complex perfume of darker berry and plum fruits, spring flowers, tobacco leaf, and a beautiful sense of minerality. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, elegant, and loaded with character, it's a singular Pessac-Léognan that will have two decades of longevity.

The aromas just pop out of the glass, offering plenty of flowers, pears, berries, rose stems and fresh currants. Wild fruits, too. It's full-bodied with so much juicy fruit and a creamy texture. Already open and delicious, with wonderful intensity. 30% whole-cluster fermentation. Second wine of Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Best after 2027, but fantastic now.

The 2022 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion is punching above its weight this year. Unfurling in the glass with a gourmand, lively and vibrant bouquet of raspberry, mulberries, rose, violet and cassis, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered with refined, velvety tannins and a deep core of fruit, concluding with a harmonious, elegant profile that avoids any excess, enhancing its distinctive personality. Guillaume Pouthier, Guillaume Deschepper and their team have done a fantastic job at this address, delivering an exceptional wine. (WK)

Le “C” des Carmes Haut-Brion is quickly becoming one of the greatest second wines in the region. For me, the perfect recipe is a mix of pedigree, house character, and a rewarding price—something this 2022 delivers in spades. The Grand Vin for this vintage notched three 100-point scores, making it clear that the team made the most of the growing season, but even this wine benefits from grand-vin-quality press, for what it’s worth. I also believe the secret lies in the estate’s boutique scale and relatively limited production, which lends a hand-crafted quality that shines through in “C” des Carmes. It’s this no-compromise approach that makes Guillaume Pouthier’s wines feel so genuine and distinctive across the board. While most of the Cabernet Franc goes into the Grand Vin, Cabernet Sauvignon steals the show in “C” des Carmes, though the fresh, lively character of the estate still provides an unmistakable signature. For those looking to experience the magic happening at this property, I can’t recommend the 2022 “C” des Carmes Haut-Brion enough—a remarkable buy already, and one that I suspect will reward those with bottles in their cellar for many years to come.

Pretty and ripe on the nose, there's some really lovely ripe raspberry on the front, there's also fresh fig, black cherry, blackberry compote, barrel spice, and a touch of cedar. The tannins are incredibly tight knit and well integrated, giving a soft and gentle little grip with each sip, but nothing crazy that makes me run for the butter dispenser we have here at work for high tannin incidents. It takes nickels for some reason. The palate has stewed strawberry, more cherry, a little creaminess from the barrel, rhubarb crumble, and just a long and enjoyable finish that gets a little woody at the very end, but in a way that just makes me want to take another sip. This is just such an approachable and easy bottle. Easy recommendation, too.
