Salty and spicy, with aromas of ginger, cardamom, lemons and sea salt. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, sharp and pungent, with a precise, saline character. Rich, focused and delicious. From grapes grown in Gualtallary. Fermented and aged in French oak, of which 35% was new. (JGL)

Descorchados

Review Date: 01/2025
The vines that produce the grapes for this intense and fruity chardonnay were planted at an altitude of 1,470 meters, in Gualtallary, at the northern end of the Uco Valley, on calcium-rich soils. And it behaves like what it is—a mountain white that smells of herbs and white fruits, but above all of herbs. The palate is marked by intense acidity, and the saline finish that is so common, in both red and white wines that come from those Uco soils. A textbook Andean chardonnay.

Ale Vigil is partial to a touch of flor in his top whites, as long as it occurs naturally in the winery. This left-field Gualtallary Chardonnay is savoury, spicy and slightly salty, with a brine-like top note, lovely texture, subtle 35% new wood, hints of aniseed and wild thyme and a core of beeswax and citrus zest.

The 2023 Chardonnay El Enemigo comes from Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Aged in 500-liter French oak barrels, it opens with green apple, chamomile, white peach, herbs and a subtle vermouth note. Dry, compact and saline, the oak broadens the palate where richness is otherwise restrained. The 2023 is a modern, refined profile for Gualtallary Chardonnay in a warm vintage. (JH)

El Enemigo is a collaboration between Adrianna Catena, historian and youngest daughter of Nicolas Catena Zapata, and Alejandro Vigil, the director of winemaking at Bodega Catena Zapata. Vigil is a Chardonnay expert, and he is responsible for crafting the famed Catena Zapata “White Stones” and “White Bones” Chardonnays – perhaps the most collectible Chardonnays in South America. The El Enemigo Chardonnay, however, offers a compelling alternative viewpoint at a very reasonable price. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley, this Chardonnay stands out because a portion of the wine is aged under a layer of flor (a veil of yeast, similar to the method used for Fino Sherry), an uncommon technique that imparts subtle savory, nutty, and saline notes, balancing the vibrant fruit from the high-altitude terroir. The wine is fermented in large (500L) French oak barrels, 35% of which are new, and aged in the same barrels for 9 months. The resulting wine is not oxidized, however, but the contact with the flor contributes a faint white almond note, along with a weighty mouthfeel and texture. With a pH of 3.04 this is also an exceptionally racy wine, offering a wonderful counterbalance to the richness on the palate. The oak is so seamlessly integrated, melding perfectly with ripe golden apple and quince notes, and there is a line of minerality streaking through the core of the wine. With so many outstanding Chardonnays made in the New World, this one remains a standout, for its effortless balance between its golden fruit intensity and a stony, electric palate. This is, quite simply, one of the best Chardonnay deals we have available right now, from any country.

Nice and fairly complex nose, there's some apples and lemon, but also dried herbs and a roundness of barrel and barrel spices wrapping around everything, like a big hug. The palate is nice and mid-rich but with some still fairly fresh fruit in the whole thing, there's definitely a good amount of oak but nothing that dips more than a toe over the line. There's a reasonable amount of acidity, but for people who are acid shy this might be worth putting on your radar as well, it's not flabby by any means but the focus is more on the fruit and barrel working together, while the acidity kind of does its own thing off on the side. The leaves the finish lingering, with that battle of fruit and oak, the Froakish War, raging and ultimately, I think you win. Especially if you're looking for something to replace that R-wine but just a single little pat of butter on top.

Notes

El Enemigo was born in 2009 in Mendoza as a passion project and has since developed an almost cult-like following that is steady and growing. The minds behind the winery are Adrianna Catena, daughter of the legendary Nicolás Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, chief winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata and former head of the soil division at Argentina’s Wine Institute. The idea for El Enemigo took shape after a celebration honoring Nicolás Catena in London. While walking along the River Thames, Adrianna and Alejandro discussed their vision: to create a wine that honors tradition while challenging convention. The name El Enemigo—Spanish for “the enemy”—reflects their desire to confront the status quo. Inspired by a shared love for Bordeaux, their goal was to produce cool-climate, high-altitude Cabernet Franc. Alejandro Vigil was already well-known in Argentina for elevating Cabernet Franc, helping establish it as one of the country’s signature grapes, and he handles all technical aspects of the viticulture and winemaking. Adrianna Catena, who earned a PhD in history from the University of Oxford and has taught as a historian, contributes a strong intellectual and historical dimension, shaping the winery’s vision. Based primarily in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, the winery focuses only on high-altitude vineyards that bring freshness, structure, and complexity to the wines.
