2022 Stewart Cellars Yountville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Perfumed and lifted aromas of damson plums, rose hips, cedar and tobacco leaves. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and acidity and notes of blackberries, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Tannins will soften with age. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

T'is the season for unbelievable deals, and this one is right up there with the best I've seen this year! We have a duo of wines from Stewart with massive discounts that have to be seen to be believed! The Yountville Cab from this renowned producer is sourced from two small vineyards in this prime, cooler-climate sub AVA of Napa Valley that's also home to Dominus, Kapcsandy, Keever, Sleeping Lady and more. The wine has beautiful blue and black fruit, ripe plum, blackcurrant, hints of tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, cedar spice and new leather. Rich, with soft supple fruit, but also plenty of power and rocky minerals at the core. The fruit is very dominant right now, but I have the suspicion that this wine will age beautifully and gain more savory complexity down the road. Drink it now for it's youthful exuberant fruit and polish, stash some away in the cellar for a more elegant, layered experience down the road. At this pricing it's an absolute no-brainer deal. Seriously classy Cabernet from a top-notch small producer, for a third of the price it should be!

There's a dark core of fruit in here, kind of a mélange of cherry, blackberry, plum skin, and then the lightest little touch of purple flowers. There's also touches of olive, leather, a little bit of dried alfalfa, and green peppercorn around the edges. The palate starts with a pop of cherry, but then that goes into a little more savory notes with some soy, umami, barrel spice, barrel toast, and then the fruit comes back to vie with the tannins, pushed along by acidity. This is a little bit more savory than I expected, and I really love that. Savory wines pair better with food than lush and plush fruit bombs, and that alone means that this wins the coveted and industry sought after Fat Potato award. Definitely have this with a nice fatty steak and a fatter potato with as much butter as your doctor will allow. It'll be delicious.

Notes

A refined and perfectly proportioned Cabernet Sauvignon from the more moderate, temperate growing region of Yountville. This wine shows particular poise and balance in a vintage when many wines in hotter areas suffered from over-ripeness. Sourced from two vineyards, one on either side of the valley. Hanna Vineyard on the boarder of Oak Knoll and Yountville sits on an alluvial fan of gravels from the Mayacamas Mountains. The other, Moynier Vineyard is in eastern Yountville with volcanic soils and illustrious neighbors such as Kapscandy and Cliff Lede. The wine was gently extracted with 26 days on skins before being aged 22 months in 70% new French oak barrels.
