Really vivid and racy blue fruit to the nose. Punchy and floral with bright acidity that cuts through the tense, full-bodied palate, and creamy, melted tannins which are well integrated and expansive. Excellent fruit purity and raciness. Cabernet sauvignon grafted onto old-vine pais. Lot 114. (ZS)

The 2020 Renacido Vineyard, marked with Lt #114, was produced with Cabernet Sauvignon from Cauquenes (Maule), searching for finesse, tension and fine tannins. It was produced with grapes from ancient País vines regrafted to Cabernet Sauvignon 10 years ago with some 12% Malbec in the field blend that has been, in the words of Derek Mossman, "uncertified organic for 75+ years." It fermented in open lagars with indigenous yeasts and a small portion of whole clusters that were foot-trodden, then it matured in neutral barrels over two winters. It has 13.4% alcohol and an incredible pH of 3.3 with 6.23 grams of acidity. There's finesse and perfume here, with the core of 2020 ripeness, but all very subtle. (LG)

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Renacido Vineyard comes from Coronel de Maule, Cauquenes, in the Maule Region. It was aged for 2 winters in used barrels. The redcurrant-inflected nose also contains jammy blueberry and sweetbrier notes with touches of boldo, graphite and garrigue. Dry and juicy in the mouth, the fairly reactive tannins and full-bodied palate make for a somewhat tacky, structured red. A wine that demonstrates the importance of harvesting at just the right point in a warm year. (JH)

Descorchados

Cabernets from Maule, especially those from dry-farmed vineyards, tend to offer an exuberant, very fruity vision of the variety, although sometimes they can also have somewhat rustic textures and wild tannins in comparison with their counterparts from Alto Maipo, where the cabernet aristocracy is found in South America. This cabernet is a good example of that somewhat indomitable character. From vineyards grafted onto país in the Cauquenes zone, it has aromas of fruits and even flowers. The palate is intense and full of succulent and muscular tannins, but at the same time, it's accompanied by acidity that's unusually fresh for the warm 2020 season.

Notes

Garage Wine Co. was founded in 2001 by Derek Mossman Knapp, Pilar Miranda, and oenologist Dr. Alvaro Peña. Originally from Toronto, Knapp moved to Chile in the late 1990s—initially for a skiing trip—but stayed after meeting his wife, Pilar Miranda, and discovering the potential of the country's old-growth vineyards. Garage Wine Co. began as a literal "garage" hobby to make small-batch wines for family and friends. It has since grown into a mid-sized artisanal winery into a respected producer of small-batch, terroir-driven wines from the Maule Valley and other regions of southern Chile. The winery works closely with local growers to revive old, dry-farmed vineyards using traditional “originario” methods such as hand cultivation and ploughing with horses, and they ferment all their wines with indigenous yeasts in a hands-on, minimal-intervention style. The Renacido Vineyard is a distinctive site in Chile’s Maule Valley where the winery sources old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon that’s been dry-farmed and tended with traditional, hands-on methods. The vines—some over 150 years old and originally planted as País before being grafted to Cabernet Sauvignon—grow on silty, sandy granitic soils on an east-facing slope in the coastal range, giving the fruit a unique combination of bright red fruit, herbal complexity, and fine texture. Garage Wine Co. ferments these grapes with indigenous yeasts and gentle manual punch-downs, then ages the wine in neutral barrels for two winters, resulting in
