Oyster shells, iodine, salted lime and chalky green fruit. Fresh and succulent on the palate with a crisp medium body and a bright finish. One feels the ocean influence and freshness despite the warm weather conditions in 2023. (ZS)

Vinous

Review Date: 11/2023
The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc originates from the Los Acantilados Estate in San Javier, Viedma, Río Negro, and underwent an eight-month barrel regimen in both new and used French and American oak. This yellow-hued wine presents initial notes of lime and grass, layered with a hint of mint and grapefruit. Dry and firm, the malic mouthfeel persists, leaving behind a long, intense and flavorful impression. This is a maritime-inspired Argentine white. (JH)

Ripe and citrus in character, this is a light-bodied white wine from Patagonia. Flavors of lime and peach tea are lifted by light notes of mint. It has a lingering lime and orange peel finish.

Notes

Revolutionary is the word Patricia Ortiz, owner of Wapisa, uses to describe her winery. Located in San Javier, Rio Negro, Patagonia, Argentina, Wapisa is just 25 miles from the Atlantic ocean and is the only winery that exists in this unique coastal area of Patagonia – most Patagonian wineries are much further inland. “Wapisa” is the indigenous Patagonian word for “whale.” Not only do whales frequent the nearby coastline, but a local legend talks of a Wapisa that actually lived on land. Wapisa’s estate vineyard “Finca Los Acantilados” stands out for its lime clay soils, which provide ample acidity to the wines The terroir is complemented by an outstanding diurnal shift, highlighted by cool maritime breezes that sweep over the vineyards at night, leading to balanced and fruity wines with a touch of salinity and a delicate varietal expression. As Master of Wine Tim Atkin has stated, this is “the new Argentina.
