The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru is a step up from the previous Premier Crus in terms of mineralité and sophistication. It has wonderful fruit concentration, with a mixture of raspberry and blackcurrant laced with light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied, focused and well structured with a slightly confit-like entry, finely chiseled tannins and a limestone-driven, minerally finish. This is very promising.(NM)

A wonderfully elegant, wafting and intricately layered nose features notes of the essence of red pinot fruit, rose petal, violet and crushed anise. There is a highly attractive sense of underlying tension to the more elegant and more mineral-driven flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere, chiseled and impressively long finish. This is beautifully balanced and pretty much textbook Petite Chapelle.*Burghound Sweet spot Outstanding!*

A continuation of the Ergot plot but not the same soil. It has much the same mother rock as Chapelle-Chambertin, with 40cm of soil. For En Ergot the topsoil is similar but without the mother rock. Petite Chapelle has older vines as En Ergot had to be replanted after the 1985 frost. Fresh ruby red, more oak showing on the nose. When that blows off there is a lot of wine here. Excellent density and a nobility of dark raspberry fruit, much more grip than Corbeaux and more finesse than Clos Prieur. Good acidity and persistence. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.

While Petit Chapelle is best-known for sitting below Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Louis positioned the domaine parcel, "just above En Ergot", which tells you something of that pride in the other Premier Cru. (In fairness, we were just talking about introducing En Ergot as a cru in the domaine's line up.) Still, this one is the more impressive with its ethereal finesse and decided prettiness. Bramble, raspberry, spice rack and black tea leaves create a delicious jumble on the palate. Deep and long, the tannins are sublimely refined and melt into the full body.
