The young 2024 Albariño is still faintly reductive with the balsamic and medicinal notes of the very young wines. It has a better palate in a year when the grapes achieved very good ripeness (it has 13.5% alcohol) and kept very good freshness and high acidity, coming through as very balanced. It's varietal and primary, with a classical bitter twist in the finish. (LG)

Sonia Castro sources this larger volume white from 22 parcels in Castrelo with an average age of 45 years. Fermented and lees aged for six months in stainless steel, it has vibrant pear and citrus fruit flavours, a waft of sea salt and a palate-cleansing, granite-influenced finish.

The flagship wine of the family, 2024 Albariño is tank aged for freshness yet imparts impressive complexity as well. Light layers of peach, key lime, and vanilla cookie combine around sharp acidity, with tension and structured intensity. Still guarded and youthful, it will shine.

Really pretty and almost crystalline nose. There's white peach, ripe pear, a little lemon candy, and some white flowers. This is a little bit more light and pretty and less juicy than some of other other Albarinos but no less amazing, and definitely with a little bit more elegance. The palate is still fairly juicy with more white peach, apricot, lemon zest and pith, and more pretty and lovely white flowers coming through. This is really fantastic and a super crushable bottle for the summer time, when you want to crush something of quality.

Notes

agar de Costa is a family-owned winery founded in 1950 in the heart of the Salnés Valley, the historic and most renowned subzone of Rías Baixas. The Salnés Valley is especially distinctive because of its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which creates a cool, humid climate with mild temperatures, frequent rainfall, and strong maritime influences that are ideal for growing Albariño grapes. Granite-rich soils, salty ocean breezes, and morning fog contribute to the bright acidity, dense minerality, and sense of freshness that have made wines from this region internationally acclaimed. Within this unique landscape, Lagar de Costa farms 7.3 hectares of vineyards spread across 22 separate plots, allowing the family to work with a variety of microclimates and soil conditions throughout the valley. The vineyards average 45 years of age, but two of the estate’s parcels contain vines that are more than 100 years old. These old vines produce lower yields with exceptional concentration and complexity, adding depth and elegance to the wines. Today, the winery’s third generation is dedicated primarily to vineyard work, carefully preserving traditional growing practices while maintaining the health of the historic vines.
