2024 Envinate "Albahra" Garnacha Tintorera Castilla-La Macha
92
Vinous
The 2024 Albahra blends 65% Garnacha Tintorera and 35% Moravia Agria from the chalk soils of Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha. It opens with expressive fruit aromas of sour cherry and rose, accented by menthol and lavender notes. This fermented primarily in concrete, with the Moravia Agria aged in barrels. It is an intelligent, well-conceived expression that shows both intensity and a touch of grip. (LG)

Notes
Envínate (translates as "wine yourself") is the brainchild of 4 friends, winemakers Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez. This gang of 4 formed back in 2005 while studying enology at the University of Miguel Hernandez in Alicante. Upon graduation, they formed a winemaking consultancy, which evolved into Envínate, a project that focuses on exploring distinctive parcels mainly in the Atlantic-inflected regions of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands, as well as the Levante, closer to the Meditteranean Coast. Their collective aim is to make profoundly pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise manner. Albahra (named for the vineyard location, and meaning “small sea”) comes from a single vineyard divided into 3 parcels at 800 meters elevation in the Almansa region, around the town of Albacete. Almansa is located at the southeastern tip of Castilla-La Mancha. Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a hybrid of the Garnacha and Petit Bouschet grapes. It is one of the few red grapes with dark colored juice, hence the name Tintorera, or tinted. This wine is fermented with 50% whole cluster s in 4500 liter cement vats, with soft pigeage and a short maceration of 7 days. Maturation happens in the same vats for 8 months before bottling.
