2022 Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Review Date: 01/2024For the moment, this is showing off its 90% new oak very proudly with toasted spices, roasted meat and cocoa powder. Baked blackberries and succulent plums fill in on the palate. Brooding and firmly structured, this will need five to six years to start opening up. There are six parcels here, evenly divided between the top and bottom portions of the climat.

Notes
Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "6 parcels – 3 high and 3 low… 0.80 ha. Here it’s 90%new oak – none of the others use so much… There’s a faint barrel spice but less than most of the other wines – ‘yes we could probably get away with 100% new oak – we like to keep a few older barrels – but yes, Mazis eats the oak very easily…’ The largest scale but another wine that tempers its concentration with fine fluidity to the flavour – there’s no extra richness but there’s clearly extra flavour depth in the middle and finish of this wine – the finish wide, faintly drying with tannin but almost grainless – and only very, very slowly fading – that’s a simply excellent grand cru wine."(01/2024)
