An exemplary mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from the team at Far Mountain, this wine is sourced from the 50-year-old, dry-farmed vines at Alta Vista Vineyard in Sonoma's Moon Mountain District. The volcanic soils and gnarled head-trained vines make for a dramatic, elegant wine: Pine needles and bay leaf frame wild mountain berries and mineral tones of pencil lead and iron. The palate shows sappy tart blackberries, muddled mint leaves, and graphite streaks across the flavour profile, finishing with fresh chopped herbs and white pepper—a fresh, invigorating Cabernet from Sonoma showing so much respect for the site.

Named for the fracture in the rock of an old terrace in the vineyard and aged for one year in 35% new French oak, the 2021 Fission is a youthful dark purple color and is layered on the nose with deep notes of blackcurrants, piney herbs, minty accents, graphite, and gravelly earth as well as a resinous herbal quality. It’s full-bodied, with a robust structure, although it has very appealing freshness. I enjoy the refined, savory feel that continues through the finish. It’s emblematic of what this side of the mountain can offer, and I encourage readers to seek these wines out. Drink 2026-2046.

If you like mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, you must discover Far Mountain Winery, run by husband and wife winemaking team Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto. Their specialty is "dramatic wines from dramatic sites." All single vineyard wines from Sonoma Valley and the Moon Mountain District (on the border between Napa and Sonoma) you get beautiful concentration balanced by high elevation acidity. One of their flagship Cabernets is "Fission" sourced from the Alta Vista Vineyard on Moon Mountain. We have two releases right now - the 2021 and the 2019. The 2021 spent 12 months in French oak, 35% of it new. True to the Far Mountain style, it's savory and bursting with dark brambly fruit. Still a little more fruit forward than the 2019, it also has notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, fresh herbs, minerality from the vineyard's volcanic soils, and a long stony finish.

The nose on this is almost intoxicating, it's super dark and alluring with ripe blackberries, black cherry, plum skin, purple flowers, and then a firm hit of barrel spice towards the end. It's just tall got that whole tall, dark-haired and handsome vibe going on, and I think I felt it wink at me. There's a sweetness and generosity of fruit on the nose, and then the palate is much darker and more brooding, with the same fruits but they're all dustier and a little inky, with a reasonable acidity and a long finish that fades from fruit to toast and barrel spice. This is an absolutely delicious and polished bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for someone who really does want something dense and chewy in the best of ways. There's an inky core of this that just slowly unfolds in the glass, it's really fun to drink.

Notes

Sourced from Alta Vista Vineyard on Moon Mountain. 50-year-old, head-trained, dry-farmed vines that produce Cabernet of uncommon depth and complexity.
