Another incredibly concentrated, focused, insanely impressive wine in the lineup is the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, which offers a powerful nose of darker currants, scorched earth, graphite, and savory herb aromas and flavors. This full-bodied, dense, concentrated, powerful, inward beauty needs 4-6 years in the cellar but will age forever.

The world-class 2021 La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon can benefit from a long decant. Once aroused this offers black currant cordial and creme de violette flavors that meld well with the stony accents, with touches of graphite and black cherry compote. The beautiful purple and black floral aromatics add to the enjoyment as this beauty could really use another year in the cellar prior to enjoying.

In 2021, with yields down 30-35%, the La Jota was very precise and focused, with saturated layers of extremely dark fruit nuanced by very expressive ironstone minerality and fresh garrigue. Full-bodied with robust, broad-shouldered tannins that are chocolaty. More of that iron minerality is layered throughout, and for all the fruit density here, there is a balance of freshness that is almost hard to imagine. So, don't imagine it; snap these up and see for yourself. (JC)

So much black currant, dark fruit, pine cone, bark and pine needle aromas that show a depth and intensity with round, polished and creamy tannins. Medium to full body, with a complex and gorgeously flavored finish. A blend of 82% cabernet sauvignon, 6.5% cabernet franc, 5% malbec, 4% merlot and 2.5% petit verdot. Give this three to four more years to come around.

The 2021 La Jota is an absolute masterclass in Howell Mountain Cabernet. Winemaker Chris Carpenter—of Lokoya and Cardinale fame—may well be the finest craftsman of powerful yet poised, mountain-grown Cabernet of his generation. His monumental wines over the past few decades stand as a testament to unwavering dedication and precision. Few producers capture the immense power and intensity of site with such consistency, while maintaining vibrancy, dynamism, and refinement. From this historic estate, first planted in the late 1800s, the 2021 La Jota is a tour de force of Howell Mountain Cabernet. The nose is deeply expressive, redolent of crème de cassis, blackberry coulis, dried wildflowers, graphite, leather, charred oak spice, and crushed rock. There is beautiful tension between the richness of the fruit, the wild savory chaparral character of the mountain, and a firm mineral backbone. Structurally, the wine is muscular and brooding, yet the tannins are remarkably refined and fine-grained for such a powerful expression. It’s a Cabernet of both authority and precision, with exceptional balance and a long, resonant finish. An incredible wine with decades ahead of it. Enjoy now with an hour in the decanter, or cellar confidently for 20+ years. Our limited-time Insider’s Advantage pricing offers a very rare opportunity to secure this iconic Howell Mountain Cabernet at nearly 40% below its typical retail price.
