James Halliday

Reviewed July 2024
From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere; 10% whole bunches and matured nine months in French barriques (25% new). A deep ruby. Aromas of kirsch, damson plums, licorice root and spices; this heady, concentrated wine has a lot of meat on the bones, with ripe, persistent tannins boding well for the future. A great contrast to the more delicate Giant Steps wines such as Bastard Hill and Primavera. (PR)

Complex aromas of blueberry bush, wild blackberries, graphite and pomegranates. The palate is medium-bodied with seamlessly integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of Damson plums, dark cherries, coffee beans and wild raspberries. Vibrant and refined, with a firmly integrated structure.

Earthy, bunchy aromas lead with snapped twig, cassia, liquorice root, kirsch, plum and nutmeg, backed by dried herbs, pan juices and subtle clove. Damp earth rises with air. The palate is fulsome and sappy with sapidity and power – dark cherry, plum skin, stalkiness, tilled earth and dried cranberry, lifted by forest floor notes. Mocha hints lurk but don’t fully emerge. Chalky, firm tannins cut the texture and funnel complexity into a savoury finish. Whole bunch integration adds savoury dimension around the fruit. Excellent texture and intensity.

A stunning red, with a fleshy core of black cherry, plum and blackberry flavors accented with salted black licorice, cardamom, Earl Grey and dried thyme. Accents of fresh tomato leaf and sandalwood linger on the finish alongside firming tannins. (MAW)

Notes

Located on the steep slopes of the Warramate Ranges, the Sexton Vineyard is in one of the most revered pockets of the Valley. Being well up the Range’s north-facing slopes, topsoil is thin and root systems have established themselves in shallow gravelly loams above a tough, rocky clay base. Bunch yields set naturally low in this environment, resulting in intensely flavored fruit with high skin to juice ratio. The fruit was handpicked and fermented in a combination of small oak fermenters and stainless-steel open vats. The resulting blend is 20% whole bunch fermented. All parcels were matured in 225L French oak barriques (25% new, 75% seasoned) for 10 months.
