Mixed ages from the 1960s through to 1996, and they have recently top grafted some of the younger vines. Picked a little later in the series. Since 2020 Jeremy has opted for less extraction having realised that Malconsorts will always stay firm. Just racked back to barrel after a very late malolactic. This is sensual, absolutely on the cusp of red and black fruit, with energy provided by the whole bunches to stop it becoming too rich. Drink from 2033-2042. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts was another wine that underwent a rather late malolactic fermentation, but it was nonetheless showing extremely well, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries and cassis mingled with notions of exotic spices and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's rich and fleshy, with sweet tannins and a long, expansive finish. Domaine Dujac's 2023 harvest began with Les Folatières on September 1, followed by a five-day pause before resuming on September 6. As elsewhere, yields were generous, and alcohol levels range between 13.3% and 14%. The domaine's more spacious and better temperature-controlled new winery was surely an asset, and the 2023s are shaping up nicely, offering up expressive fruit as well as plenty of underlying structure. Readers, of course, will be familiar with the outlines of the Dujac approach to producing red Burgundy: organic farming, fermentation with a predominance of whole clusters (with some 20% to 30% destemmed this year) and élevage in barrels largely sourced from Tonnellerie Rémond.(WK)

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru is another cuvée that suffered some reduction during its élevage. Despite that, the nose still has a little more density and fruit concentration, with a hint of Japanese nori in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweeter entry than the Beaux Monts. Candied orange peel notes commingle with touches of red cherry and strawberry fruit. It's a little spicy and strict on the finish. Excellent.(NM)

Black currants, fireplace timbers and kitchen spice light up the nose. Smoky minerality overtakes the sultry and seriously long finish. There are several planting dates here with most of the vines being from the 1960s. (This was purchased into the Dujac fold in 2005.) Evocative and seamless, the structure is a timeless representation of Vosne.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "“From the northern side of the vineyard, and for the detail-conscious, this contains a tiny amount of Les Gaudichots” notes Jeremy. “It’s a vineyard that we have to think has a phenomenal quality possibility, so we always ask ourselves how will we reach that” This is another rather airy nose – but easier to pick the attributes than with the Echézeaux – and boy, does this have some attractive attributes. Large in scale, much more classy in texture -and indeed fluidity too. The finish holding beautifully. That’s my new favourite – bravo!
