2018 Lexington "Gist Ranch" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Franc

Wine Enthusiast
Review Date: 12/2021There's a focused line of blackberry to the core of the nose of this bottling, as well as warmer caramel and brown-spice elements, with black peppercorn on the edges. There's intense wood spice to the palate, with cracked pepper and herb lifting the core berry fruit. (MK)

Notes
The Lexington label is the home of the Thomas Fogarty Winery's Bordeaux varietal wines. This pioneering estate established in 1981 on Skyline Dr that traverses the ridgeline of the Santa Cruz Mountains has long been celebrated for world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 2000 the family purchased and developed another high elevation estate vineyard called Gist Ranch some 2,400ft above the towns of Los Gatos and Saratoga in a remote part of the Mountains. The vines are planted at a high-density and rooted in very rocky, fractured vaqueros sandstone soils. Winemaker Nathan Kandler ferments in small lots and ages the wines for 18-24 months in small French oak barriques around 30% new.
