Wine Advocate

Perennially one of the most unique and interesting white wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2022 Alma Gist Ranch Estate White is a roughly 60%/40% blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, matured separately in 25% new 300-liter barriques and blended before bottling. It opens with an initially elusive nose that reveals an alluring, tropical-meets-alpine aroma of guava, kiwi, dried flowers and fennel. The palate strikes a beautiful balance between sleek, oily richness and taut, tensile focus, culminating in a lively, resonant finish that harmonizes textural power with a subtle chalky lift.

The 2022 White Blend Alma Gist Ranch Estate is absolutely enticing. A blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 39% Sémillon and 21% Sauvignon Musqué, it delivers an attractive, broad, mouth-filling array of plump nectarine, ripe apricot, honeycomb, chamomile and a slight waxiness. Sweet fruit and florals perfume this from the inside out, and propulsive acidity drives through the finish without pushing too hard. This is elegant and voluptuous yet carefully proportioned through and through.

Your eyes do not deceive you! We're back with a new vintage of Lexington "Alma" with an unbelievably sharp price! The 2021 vintage of this incredible white Bordeaux inspired blend sold out very quickly a few weeks back, but I'm very pleased to be able to offer the 2022 release also at an exceptional value! To recap the story here, Lexington is a label crafted by iconic Santa Cruz Mountain producer Thomas Fogarty. The Lexington brand was used for their Bordeaux varietal wines while the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays stayed under the Thomas Fogarty label. Recently the winery decided to move all wines back under the eponymous label and is discontinuing the Lexington brand. Thus, we got some absolutely incredible deals from them to move out existing inventory. The massive discount here is not reflective of the quality of the wine, it's simply to speed up the transition into the new labels. The wine itself is a stunning take on a serious and age worthy Sauvignon Blanc - Semillon blend (think Smith Haut Laffite, Domaine de Chevalier etc). The Fogarty family owns and farms their estate Grist Vineyard that sits high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, over 2000ft in elevation, with steep slopes and rocky soils. The yields here are very low producing highly concentrated, flavorful fruit. The Alma is fermented and aged in French oak barrels, 30% new, adding depth, complexity and structure to the wine. The nose explodes with white peach, preserved lemon, nectarine, summer meadow florals, framed by subtle hints of oak spice. On the palate the wine has a lovely contrast of rich, ripe, golden stone fruit, buoyed by vibrant, fresh acidity, and phenolic grip giving incredible length to the palate. A crushed rock, struck flint mineral tinge adds yet another dimension to this rocking bottle of wine. Don't be shy to load up on this one, delicious now, but another 3-5 years of ageing potential is obvious. The price...absolutely ridiculous.

I really liked the last vintage we had of this, so it makes sense I really like this vintage too. Sorry to ruin the whole thing, but yeah, I like it. That said, I tend to like the wines I review, if I don't have something positive or at least educational that I want to say I'm not going to waste the time writing a review. Makes sense right? Really pretty nose with oak at the outside edges, but then in the core there's something really inviting, with this super soft white peach note, a round lemon note, and then more of the barrel spice coming in. The palate is deliciously weighty and round in the mouth, there's always something about the texture that the Semillon brings to the party. There's very slight tartness, but then more round and weighty fruit, more white peach, a little apricot, there's a little pear dangling about, and then fresh lemon and barrel softness on the finish. This is just delightful and for just $16, this is crazy good deal. Do like, do want, will buy.

Notes

An estate grown, white Bordeaux inspired blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc (inclding 20% musque clone), 40% Sémillon. Barrel fermented and aged in 25% new 300L light toast French oak.
