The 1934 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled March 2022 with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Of the many Sogevinus Tawnies that the producer showed over its various houses, this was the oldest and tasted like it. Yet, like all of the producer's oldies, they do a great job in producing complexity without the fruit seeming too old. I'm told it is never topped off too. There are only about 450 liters left for the future. It is a bit darker, leaning a little more to molasses, but it's surprisingly fresh for its age. It has fine concentration and an endless finish. It is certainly special, not automatically a lot better than, say, a 50 Year, but a very different experience. (MS)

At nearly 90 years, this old tawny is so concentrated and complex. With its old gold character, tight acidity over orange peel and candied dried fruits, the wine is memorable. It is ready to drink. Bottled on demand. (RV)

Notes

Kopke is one of the oldest and most historic Port Houses, and they also are well known for possessing one of the largest and most impressive libraries of Colheita Port in the Douro Valley. Essentially these are vintage dated Tawny Ports, so they spend years – if not decades – slowly maturing in cask before bottling, slowly increasing in complexity as the years pass. The origins of this iconic Port House can be traced back to 1636 when a German family named Kopke moved from Hamburg to Lisbo. Two years later, Christiano Kopke established a business in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, including local wine. The purchase of a farm in the Douro, in 1781, marked the transition from a wine buying company to a major producer. Nearly 250 years later, Kopke remains a leader in the Douro Valley.
