In the Port trade since 1638, Kopke has amassed a cellar full of old Colheitas, including some remarkable rarities that Sogevinus, the owner of the firm since 2006, has begun to bring to market. This 1937 seems to grip every taste receptor with succulent peach flavor while its texture is silken and gentle to the touch. You might expect an 80-year-old wine to be as refined as this, but you probably wouldn’t expect it to be as generous, with needles of acidity pricking the cushion of fruit, bringing out a glistening sweetness. The detail begins to fade a few days after the wine is first opened, though it remains delicious. Best to throw a party for your favorite 80-year-old and share the bottle until it’s just a fond memory.

The 1937 Colheita Tawny Port comes in with 156 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is surprisingly fresh and surprisingly elegant for its age. It demonstrates its age when it finishes with power, showing remarkable grip and length, plus all those old Tawny flavors you want, the molasses, baked caramel. There's a touch of brandy lurking here and there. While this has far more power and complexity than the 1967 this issue, it does lack that wine's elegance and balance. The hard edge here is pretty hard, even if that intensity is sometimes very admirable. (I suspect it will show better if you come back in three days after opening it. They do change a little after pulling that cork, just a little, after that first rush.) At times, though, that hard edge makes it less attractive. The texture is smooth and unctuous. Overall, this is a fine experience in a blockbuster style. In some ways, I liked it no more than the 1967, though, perhaps less. To be sure, they are very differently styled as this, of course, emphasizes its power and that extra bit of complexity. Don't drink this too warm—that can make all the difference. (MS)

This extraordinary wine is still concentrated. It is also smooth, a velvet texture of richness bordering on opulence. The flavor of wood is there, but more important are the old-time fudge and toffee flavors, rounded with sweet sultanas and edged with acidity. (RV)

Notes

Kopke is one of the oldest and most historic Port Houses, and they also are well known for possessing one of the largest and most impressive libraries of Colheita Port in the Douro Valley. Essentially these are vintage dated Tawny Ports, so they spend years – if not decades – slowly maturing in cask before bottling, slowly increasing in complexity as the years pass. The origins of this iconic Port House can be traced back to 1636 when a German family named Kopke moved from Hamburg to Lisbo. Two years later, Christiano Kopke established a business in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, including local wine. The purchase of a farm in the Douro, in 1781, marked the transition from a wine buying company to a major producer. Nearly 250 years later, Kopke remains a leader in the Douro Valley.
