We’ve welcomed two Colheita wines to our Best In Show selection before, but never one quite as old as what one of our judges called this ‘swoon-worthy’ 1957 (bottled earlier this year). The Colheita style of vintage-dated tawnies usually delivers more individual and characterful profiles than blended tawnies with an indication of age, though the latter have unrivalled finesse, subtlety and soft-fruited grace. This wine is no exception to the characterful rule, with its aromas of ‘treacle, pickled walnuts, soy sauce and dried mushrooms’ and its palate of ‘immense concentration’, packed with raisin, lemon, lime, cinnamon and dried-herb flavours. Whether you buy it to commemorate a seventieth birthday next year or simply to put the colheita style through its paces, there's a huge amount to enjoy in this near-septuagenarian. *Best in Show - Decanter World Wine Awards 2026*

The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it's worth revisiting in the USA, since it's a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavors that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavor and seems to linger indefinitely. When I first saw this, it was tasted next to even more brilliant Colheitas and a bit overshadowed. On its own, it is even more stunning. It was pretty fine next to some other greats here as well. (MS)

Notes

Kopke is one of the oldest and most historic Port Houses, and they also are well known for possessing one of the largest and most impressive libraries of Colheita Port in the Douro Valley. Essentially these are vintage dated Tawny Ports, so they spend years – if not decades – slowly maturing in cask before bottling, slowly increasing in complexity as the years pass. The origins of this iconic Port House can be traced back to 1636 when a German family named Kopke moved from Hamburg to Lisbo. Two years later, Christiano Kopke established a business in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, including local wine. The purchase of a farm in the Douro, in 1781, marked the transition from a wine buying company to a major producer. Nearly 250 years later, Kopke remains a leader in the Douro Valley.
